CREATIVE WORK

Jamie Rhodes' creative portfolio is a testament to his versatility and depth as a writer. His work ranges from the historically rich "A Castle in England," which brings to life the stories embedded within ancient walls, to "Plant Stories," where the natural world tells its own compelling tales. "Dead Men's Teeth" offers a glimpse into the eerie past through haunting narratives, while "Amputee" explores the resilience of the human spirit. "Gunslinger" ventures into the realm of the speculative, challenging perceptions of reality and morality. Completing this eclectic collection, "The Hill of Life" delves into the mysteries of existence and the intricacies of our connection to the earth. Together, these works showcase Jamie's ability to navigate diverse genres and themes, making each story a unique exploration of the human condition.

SCRIPT FOR SCREEN

FOLIC ACID

A surreal coming-of-age drama about two men preparing for grandfatherhood on a road trip from Yorkshire to Dusseldorf in the early 1980’s.

The Script Readers selected this script from a national pool, to be given a read-through by professional actors in front of an audience of industry professionals at the Theatre Royal Stratford East.

The script then made it to the last 5% of scripts in a BBC Writersroom submission round. After positive and helpful feedback from the BBC, Jamie was able to develop the piece based on detailed notes from their script readers. He is currently seeking interested parties to take the script further.

THE EGG CRACKED

An award winning short film script written by Jamie Rhodes. This script won the IdeasTap Shorts award in 2015, chosen from over 430 entries.

This short film script uses visual metaphor and folklore to explore the emotional complexity of a simple moment in a parent’s life; a child leaving home. A moment all the more powerful for the father’s isolation and widower status.

The script received development notes from Keith Dando, course leader of MA Filmmaking at the Northern Film School.

A widower struggling to contain an adder infestation on his farm must take his only daughter to university on the day she leaves home.

IN THE CORPSE ON
THE HILL

A tragic story told as a mystical folklore tale, based on the true events of a strange and macabre murder in rural Ireland. The story unravels the mystery from the point of view of the various animals in the ecosystem a buried corpse supports.

Jamie received an Arvon Foundation grant to attend a Radio Writing retreat with BBC producer, Jonquil Panting, an experienced radio writer, and a sound recordists. Guided by these industry professionals he completed this radio play. The piece was selected for an industry reading at the Theatre Royal Stratford East. A recording of the reading, with a running time of approx 30 mins, can be heard here.
The script has since been redrafted to fit with the BBC Afternoon Drama slot of 45 mins. If you would like to read the full script, please get in touch.
